My article explains a guy named Daniel Tammet. He is an autistic savant. 'Autistic savant' means a person with an autism spectrum disorder who has an unusual gift or an outstanding skill or knowledge clearly above their general level of ability and above the population norm. All savant syndrome patients have one thing there extremely talented with. What Tammet does best is he can deal with big numbers and do crazy mathematical problems in his head. Tammet is alot different from other autistic savants because he can actually explain how he does certain things, unlike other savants. At the age of three he suffered an epileptic fit. Ever since then, he's been obsessed with counting. Whenever he would talk to people, he'd stare and study peoples shirts and count the stitches. Tammet also speaks 7 different languages and is also creating his own. He found it very hard to socialize with others and got made fun of alot. People like this make me realize how great of a life and how blessed I really am.

The article I found is about three people who have autism and savant. James can tell you the exact time with out looking,Jennifer can measure anything just by looking at it and Christopher can speak 24 different languages. People with savant once they learn something they never forget it. Its not that there smarter then us but that they have strenghs in certian areas. Autism is a disorder dealing with the brain , most children that have it our socially awkward and dont make eyecontact. People with this disorder excel at one skill.

This article talks about a man named Derek Paravicini. Derek suffers from both being blind, and has Savant syndrome and austism. Autism is when someone lacks the ability to normally maintain a social life, such as, holding a conversation, & having eye contact, lack the ability to do things normal people can do and have a limited amount of interests. Also, they have a specific movement in which they repeatidly do. Savant syndrome is when someone has an unbelievable amount of intelligence in a certain area, but the flaw in this syndrome is how it associates with Autisim. People with Savant syndrome also consist the qualities of autistic people, such as, avoiding social situations, and have limited interests. Scientists don't exactly know what causes these disorders, but they believe its something genetic or effects of enviromental factors. Therefore, Derek has all these, and his Savant syndrome advances him in the ability to be an outstanding piano artist. Derek was 3 years old when his sister noted that she heard Derek play a hymn they heard in church on the piano. Derek explains that he expresses himself through playing the piano. Its amazing how this premature, blind man can barely button his shirt, & hardly sustain a conversation and be in public places, yet he can play the piano outstandingly at any time, in front of people with no problem. Thats shows that we shouldn't take how blessed we are for granted, and we can follow our dreams because for us, healthy, and can see have so many oppurtinities that we couldn't take if we were blind or had autism, etc.

Autism is a neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties and restricted repetitive and stereotyped patter behavior. Savants are basically people who despite serious mental or physical disability have remarkable, and spectacular, talents. The link between autism and savant syndrome is that autism can be a development of savant syndrome. Scientists and researchers think that you are able to have autism without having savant, vice versa. As of today there’s not been a clear understanding to the cause of autism and therefore the understanding the link between autism and savant behavior is very tough.
The person I chose is Daniel Tammet. Tammet is a high functioning savant. His special qualities are that he is a writer, linguist and an educator. He is named as one of the world’s 100th living geniuses. He is a creator of ‘Optimnem’, a website used by thousands around the globe to learn language instruction. Unlike other savants, who can perform similar accomplishments, Tammet can describe how he does it. He speaks seven languages and is even creating his own language. The special thing about Tammet is that he could describe what he sees in his head, most savants can’t do that. Tammet was diagnosed at the age of twenty-five. He was born with the ability to experience numbers in a very vivid way. So basically his gift came about when he started to learn.

Autism is a brain developmental disability that leads to social impairments, communication difficulties and stereotyped patterns. Savant syndrome is a condition where people have outstanding skills or knowledge above the normal person. Over 50% of the savants in the world today have autism. Researchers say it has something to do with the right brain because the right brain is more concrete and direct. The person I chose is Leslie Lemke, he is an autistic savant. He had his eye surgically removed when he was only a few months old. His talent was recognized when he was around 14 years old when he was watching a movie. The next morning he was able to play the theme song perfectly with only hearing it once. Leslie is a musical gifted savant. He is now having his own concerts in hopes of being an inspiration to handicapped families.

Autism is a brain disorder that often makes it hard to communicate with and relate to others. With autism, the different areas of the brain fail to work together.Savants are people who despite serious mental or physical disability have quite remarkable, and sometimes spectacular talents. Studies suggest that half the people who suffer from Savant syndrome are known to suffer from autism while the rest might suffer brain injuries and diseases. The presence of a weakness like autism in savants can be the reason for their sheer genius. Normally someone who has autism would have low intellectual levels. But if the person is savant the intellectual levels can be extremely high.Ellen Boudreaux is blind, with an amazing musical ability, superior spatial sense and a remarkable memory. She was born prematurely in 1957; as a result of being premature she developed blindness. At 6mounths old she was humming the lullaby playing the mobile over her crib. She didn’t start walking till she was 4 years old, she had a superior spatial sense. She was aware of large objects more than 6feet away, she then would insist on going and touching them. When she walked she made a constant chirping sound. Time and music are a vital part to her life.

This URL links you to a site that talks about the top ten autistic people. I chose to write about Ellen Bourdeaux. She is a blind autustic savant. Her special abilities allows her to play music perfectly, after hearing it just one time. A local radio station actually challeneged Ellen by naming obscure songs, but Ellen prevailed by playing them to the utmost perfection. Another one of her special skills is that, even though she is blind, she can walk around freely and never run into any object. While she walks around, she makes these chirping sounds, which serves as a "radar" for objects around her. She also has a digital clock ticking inside of her head. Not literally. When she was young her mom made her listen to the automatic time recording called the "time lady" to help young Ellen get over her fear of the telephone.

Autism is a moderately rare condition resulting from a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. Savant syndrome is rare condition in which persons with autism, or other serious mental handicaps, or major mental illness, have astonishing islands of ability or brilliance that stand out in stark contrast to their overall disability. The link between the two is that savants also have autism or other handicaps. Some theories of the link between autism and savant syndrome include Biological development, and the modularity of the mind.
Daniel Tammet is an autistic savant who can perform mathematical calculations very quickly. He also speaks seven languages. Unlike other savants, Tammet is able to describe how he does it. He first showed signs after an epileptic fit at the age of three. Since then he has been obsessed with counting things.

    http://www.wisconsinmedicalsociety.org/savant_syndrome/savant_profiles/tony_deblois

Autism is a developmental disability thought to have neurological or genetic causes or both. Skills that are most likely to be affected include communication, social interaction and difficulty with flexibility of thought and play. An ‘Autistic savant’ refers to a person with autism who has an unusual gift or an outstanding skill or knowledge clearly above their general level of ability and above the population norm. Skills and behaviours seen in people with savant syndrome are so far unexplained. However, researchers think it might have something to do with the right hemisphere of the brain. While left hemisphere skills are involved with sequential, logical, linear processing and the interpretation of symbolism, the skills of the right hemisphere are much more intuitive, concrete and direct. CT and MRI scans of the brains of people with savant syndrome suggest that the right hemisphere is compensating for impairment or a lack of skill in the left hemisphere. It seems that the right hemisphere of an individual with savant syndrome focuses its attention on one of the five senses. For example, if it concentrates on hearing, then the individual concerned may have a special skill in music. Tony DeBlois is an autistic savant. When he was born he only weighed 1 lb and 3/4 oz. He was blind and autistic. When he was 2, he began playing the piano. His parents knew he had a special talent. He was then also diagnosed with savant syndrome. Tony, now 38, can play 22 instruments and performs professionally in the U.S. and other countries.

  10. The person I choose was Alonzo Clemons. Alonzo Clemons has autism and is also has savant syndrome. Autism is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. Savant Syndrome is sometimes referred to as savantism, is a rare condition in which people with developmental disorders have one or more areas of expertise, ability, or brilliance that are in contrast with the individual's overall limitations. About half the people with autism have savant syndrome. Alonzo Clemons is an artist with a remarkable background. His sculpture specialty is the creation of animal figures, which are made with fast speed, great accuracy creating a work of art. As a toddler, Clemons suffered a head injury in an accident; this changed the way he thinks, learns and communicates. While much was lost due to the injury, something miraculous also occurred, for as Clemons sometimes puts it, "God gave a gift." He began showing a interest with modeling materials and a tremendous inner drive to make sculptures. Even in situations where he did not have access to modeling clay, his determination to make models of animals was so great that he found materials in his environment that he could use for sculpting.

Autism is mental condition which starts during any persons childhood, which causes a large amount of difficulty when it relates to communicating and forming relationships with other people or even when it comes to making eye contact with others. While savant syndrome is a very rare condition when a person who has a deformity or an undeveloped portion in there brain that causes them to b mentally slow but have extraordinary abilities in other aspects such as music or math. The link between the two is that any person with autism has a chance of also having savant syndrome which would make them an autistic savant. Scientist believe that it is a deficiency regarding the left half of the brain and so the right side is try to compensate for both left and right side of the brain. The person i chose was Derek Paravicini who not only is an autistic savant but he is also blind. His ability is that he is extraordinarily wonderful at playing the piano even though he is blind. Derek was born 25 week early and was extremely light, so in order to save his life he was given oxygen therapy which caused his blindness. He was diagnosed with autism and savant syndrome a couple years after he was born, and he had discovered his talent at the age of 4 when he could play very melodic pieces only an expert could play on the piano.

The true cause of autism is not known but several theories exist which links the disorder to genetic and environmental factors. Abnormalities have been found in the brains of people with autism, such as hypoplasia, where the VII and VI lobules of the cerebellum are reduced in size. Savant Syndrome is a disorder in which individuals with neurological developmental delays in socialization and communication. These patients may be extremely gifted in a certain areas but are very delayed in others. Often, autistic people have certain routines which they refuse to move away from, as well as restricted patterns or interests that are considered to be abnormal in their focus. These habits, like autism itself, vary over a wide range, and may include hair twirling and rocking in mild cases to self-injurious behavior such as head-banging in more severe cases. Autistic patients have problems making friends and keeping conversations. They often fail to respond to stimuli, including their own names, and usually are slow in their language development. Similar to patients with Savant syndrome. In my article a child is gifted in playing in piano but it unable to communicate effectively once the music stops. He is able to hear any melody played on the piano and then is capable of playing the exact melody right after he first heard it.

  14. Autism is a range of neurodevelopment disorders that are characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive and stereotypical patters of behavior. Scientists are unsure of the cause, but believe that it could be caused through genetics, by mutated genes, or environmental, by vaccinations or influences in the environment. The lack of development in some areas of the brain seems to be common for those with Autism. Savant’s syndrome is a rare condition in which the brain has developmental delays, in which the person demonstrates profound abilities typically in one area that exceed the average human’s abilities. Savant Syndrome can be acquired through birth or a traumatic event such as strokes or concussions. Over 50% of people with Savants Syndrome are also autistic. Similar to Autism many of those who have Savants struggle with motor and learning abilities due to the under-development of the brain. Leslie Lemke was a blind autistic boy who was given up at birth due to premature complications. Leslie was given a piano at an early age to listen to while his adopted mother hit random keys. Leslie’s parents were watching a movie while Leslie was listening one day. Later that night Leslie’s mother heard music, and thought the TV was still on, however, it was Leslie flawlessly performing the theme song of the movie he had only heard a few hours earlier. His musical ability was his way of communicating. He began to sing while he played. The musical Savant began playing for more than his adopted mom, he began to play concerts for crowds.

  18. Autism is when a person has developmental delays that cause them to have trouble communicating. Savant syndrome is when the people who have these developmental delays possess amazing, unique qualities that the normal human being does not. The link between autism and savant syndrome is that the left side of the brain isn’t functioning properly, so the right side is doing a lot of work. Scientists believe that these talents occur because people with autism have such a strong focus on a certain sense(the one that is associated with their abilities) because of the lack of activity and/or ability of the left side of their brain. Jonathan Lerman is an autistic savant who has incredible artistic abilities. He started to show signs of autism at age 2, and was then diagnosed with the disorder at age 3. Autism as I have been taught exists as developmental disorder that affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. Although most that have encountered an individual with this rapidly growing mental condition would think that one who carries this disorder would not by any mean be intelligent or successful in life. A savant is a person with extraordinary mental abilities, and an autistic savant is typically someone with autistic symptoms who also has a single outstanding area of knowledge or ability. The reason and correlation between autism and savant autism is still unknown to our modern scientist of this day. A famous savant autism victim by the name of Orlando Serrell after an accident he realized he had new abilities he could perform complex calendar calculations and remember the weather every day from the day of the accident.

Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. Savantism is a rare condition in which people with neurodevelopmental disorders, notably autism spectrum disorders, and/or brain injuries, demonstrate profound and prodigious capacities and/or abilities far in excess of what would be considered normal. For a while researchers thought that it was due to impairments in social interaction and communication but now, newer researchers believe that it is the RRBI that permits autistic people to become savants. One researcher in particular thinks that it is due to the obsessional interests and repetitive behaviors that would allow someone to practice, albeit inadvertently, whichever skill they were obsessed with.

He knows 11 languages and he learned a language in a week and was fluent in it. When he was four years old he had Epilepsy and autism which what they think brought this savant syndrome to him. Autism Spectrum disorder also known as ASD is any developmental disabilities that have been caused by a brain abnormality. A person with ASD typically has difficulty with social communication skills.

Normally, an autistic sufferer would have low intellectual levels. But if the sufferer is a savant the intellectual levels can be anywhere above 100.
An interesting thing to note here is, not all savants would suffer from autism and all the autism sufferers need not be savants. The reason for autism accompanying Savant syndrome is still not known and it is this inability to reason that this syndrome is studied by many physicians with such curiosity."

A boy named Daniel Tammet started suffering with epileptic fits at age three. Through out the years he started to have an obsession with performing mathematical calculations ad would never stop solving them. The unique thing about Daniel's disability is that he can explain how he solved the problems without having any trouble. He is diagnosed with salvant syndrome. A savant is a person with astonishing mental abilities. He is also autistic which is a developmental disablity that is caused by brain damage. People with this usually have difficulty with socializing.
The link between the two of these is that when you have savant syndrome you have some type of autisum. One scientist thinks that savant exists because if you have this repetitive behavior it can allow you to practice whichever ability you are obsessed with.
Even to this day Tammet can speak seven different languages.
I have a friend who has a son with severe autism. Brett can not speak well or understand what is going on around in his life like birthdays, Christmas' and other holidays. He is very active but twirls shoestrings or other strings in his hand all the time. Brett goes to a special school where he learns with other autistic kid. Daniel Tammet is an author of two books and also is known for holding the European record for the most decimal points in pi. Daniel said when he was little he was not really social and couldn't really show eye contact with other people but he said it had taken much time and effort to get to where he can posibaly be able to do so now.
