In the movie The Soloist, Jaime Fox plays a homeless street musician who suffers from schizophrenia. Throughout the film, Fox does an outstanding job displaying the classic signs of schizophrenia. List the signs and symptoms of schizophrenia displayed and give examples from the movie to illustrate each term. Also, do some research on mental illness and homeless. Link your article in post and include statistics and pertinent information in your post. Due Friday 11:59pm No late post will be excepted.

  1. Jaime Fox in the Soloist expressed the symptoms and signs of schizophrenia and how it can effect a person's life. First he showed symptoms because he had many voices in his head who made him think things that were not true and cause him to panic. For example, when he was in the apartment the voices were telling him that the apartment was not safe and caused him to freak out. Also, when he was playing the in the Julliard school with his classmates the voices were distracting him from paying attention. ALso, his schizophrenia caused him to see things and imagine things that were not there. For example, when he was young he saw the car on fire and when his sister brought him the soup he thought she was up to no good so he ran away. Another sign is usually schizophrenics have a skill or hobbie that is their escape from their voices. Jaime Fox's escape was music, therefore, when he played the celo or whatever instrument, he did not hear the voices and was focused on what he was playing, and was extremely well at it. Lastly, his schizphrenia caused him to speak in "word salads" which is when he says a bunch of things about nothing and does not make sense. Statistics show that 2.4 million Americans live with schizophrenia.Thirty one percent of homeless people have a mental disorder or addiction. Ethnic minorities are less likely to have access to proper health services to help them deal with their mental disorders.

  3. In the movie The Soloist, Jamie Fox plays a homeless man who also has schizophrenia. His character had all the classic signs of schizophrenia. The first major sign is that he hears voices that aren’t there. He won’t live inside because of the voices he hears. The voices distract him from everyday life, and cause him to not be able to focus. The voices caused him to drop out of Julliard because he could not focus. Another sign is how he uses his ability to play the violin and cello to escape from the voices. He also has thought disorder, where he can’t put all his words together to make sentences. He also suffers from hallucinations. When he was younger he thought he saw a car on fire. He also thought his sister was trying to hurt him when she brought him soup. He made his sister eat the soup, since he thought she was trying to hurt him.
http://www.schizophrenia.com/szfacts.htm# Approximately 200,000 individuals with schizophrenia or manic-depressive illness are homeless. There are more people with untreated severe psychiatric illnesses living on America’s streets than are receiving care in hospitals. Approximately 90,000 individuals with schizophrenia or manic-depressive illness are in hospitals receiving treatment for their disease.

  4. In the soloist, Jamie Foxx plays a schizophrenic homeless man. We learn threw flashbacks in the movie that as a kid he had hallucinations, one being a car on fire rolling down the street. As, he went to college he would hear voices telling him that everyone could hear his thoughts and no one loved him. These voices made him panic and scared. When he came back from college after dropping out, he believed his sister was trying to poison him but his food. That was the night he ran away and stayed on the streets. As an adult we see that he would speak by word salad, not making any sense. These symptoms made Jamie Foxx fearful and withdrawn, and sometimes he became terrified of what happens in his minds. Also like most schizophrenics he had a talent and he was an amazing cello player and could play almost any string instrument without much practice. People with untreated psychiatric illnesses constitute one-third, or approximately 250,000, of the estimated 744,000 homeless population. In many cities such as New York, homeless people with severe mental illnesses are now an accepted part of the urban landscape and make up a significant percentage of the homeless who ride subways all night, sleep on sidewalks, or hang out in the parks. These mentally ill individuals drift into the train and bus stations, and even the airports. Many other homeless people hide from the eyes of most citizens. They shuffle quietly through the streets by day, talking to their voices only when they think nobody is looking, and they live in shelters or abandoned buildings at night. Some shelters become known as havens for these mentally ill wanderers and take on the appearance of a hospital psychiatric ward. Others who are psychiatrically ill live in the woods on the outskirts of cities, under bridges, and even in the tunnels that carry subway trains beneath cities.

  5. In the Soloist, Jamie Fox plays a character who suffers from schizophrenia. Many signs of schizophrenia that Jamie Fox's character displays consist of his constant pacing around whenever he would talk to Robert Downey Jr.'s character the newspaper editor. Other sign displayed are dropping out of activities like when Jamie Fox dropped out of Julliard and became homeless, he also has trouble forming or keeping relationships with people which is why he is homeless and he is extremely antisocial with only one true friend the newspaper editor and one close family member his sister. He also talks to himself out loud through out the duration of the movie, he also displays obvious signs of a word salad when the newspaper editor first meets him he connects about of information that are mixed together that don't make much sense. Jamie's character even shows signs of not knowing how to properly react to situations and gestures correctly shown when the editor wants to shake his hand but he doesn't know how to appropriately respond to this. During the movie Jamie's character is even show to suffer from hallucinations and thought his sister was trying to poison him which is a common sign. There apparently is a strong correlation between Americans with a mental illness and homeless Americans today. A study was conducted and it was found that "mental illness was the third largest cause of homelessness for single
adults (mentioned by 48% of cities)". Therefore mental illness and homelessness share a strong connection to each other in today's society.

•Schizophrenia is a serious disorder of the mind and brain but it is also highly treatable. Although there is no cure (as of 2007) for schizophrenia, the treatment success rate with antipsychotic medications and psycho-social therapies can be high. If the appropriate level of investment is made in research, it has been estimated that a cure for schizophrenia could be found within 10 years (by the year 2013). Traditionally, however, schizophrenia has only received a small fraction of the amount of medical research dollars that go into other serious diseases and disorders (see below - Schizophrenia Research - for more information).
•New Treatments: There are over 15 new medications for the treatment of schizophrenia currently in development by different biotech and pharmaceuticals companies (source: Special report on New Schizophrenia Medications). Additionally, there are many new and improving psycho-social treatments and cognitive therapies for schizophrenia that are being rolled out with significant success. Together these new treatments hold significant promise of a better life in the future for people who have schizophrenia. Check here for the latest news coverage of these new therapies.
•Schizophrenia is a devastating disorder for most people who are afflicted, and very costly for families and society. The overall U.S. 2002 cost of schizophrenia was estimated to be $62.7 billion, with $22.7 billion excess direct health care cost ($7.0 billion outpatient, $5.0 billion drugs, $2.8 billion inpatient, $8.0 billion long-term care).

  7. Jamie Fox plays a schizophrenic street musician in the movie the Soloist. When the movie first starts out you just see him as a homeless man with a violin but throughout the story you discover that he was once enrolled in Julliard but dropped out because of his schizophrenia. His schizophrenia came about when he was young, there was a flash back of him practicing in his room and then hallucinating of a car catching on fire and rolling down the street. Hallucinating is a big sign of schizophrenia. You also find out that he constantly hears voices in his head telling him to do certain things. This is why he had to drop out of school because he couldn't figure out what real and what wasn't. He had a hard time keeping relationships and when he talked it was just one big word salad. His condition caused him to become homeless just like a lot of homeless people. It is estimated that 1/3 of the homeless population have a mental illness usually schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. One reason for so many homeless people with mental disorders is because they are getting kicked out of the mental hospitals to save money. 36% of the people that get discharged from the mental hospital become homeless within the first 6 months. They usually become homeless because no one will take care of them and they can't function well enough to hold a job and raise a family and stuff like that. As a result they end up on the streets usually living in their own little world. http://mentalillnesspolicy.org/consequences/homeless-mentally-ill.html

  9. In the movie The Soloist, Jaime Fox plays a homeless street musician who struggles with schizophrenia. A sign of schizophrenia is when someone hears all different kinds of voices in their head. In the movie it shows that Jaime Fox was hearing voices in his head while he was out practicing his music and in his apartment. Another thing about schizophrenia is that you imagine things that aren’t really there. In the movie it shows that when he was younger he saw a car on fire rolling by his house but it was all in his head. Also another thing is that they put a bunch of words together that don’t make any sense. Usually people with this illness have something that they can cope with to help get their minds off of all the voices that they hear. In this case Jaime Fox’s get away is by playing music. Statistics show that this illness begins around the ages of 15 to 25. About 2.2 million people in the US suffer from this illness. After 10 years, of the people diagnosed with schizophrenia: 25% completely recover, 25% much improved, relatively independent, 25% improved, but require extensive support network, 15% hospitalized, unimproved, 10% dead, mainly caused by Suicide. After 30 years, of the people diagnosed with schizophrenia: 25% completely recover, 35% much improved, relatively independent, 15% improved, but require extensive support network, 10% hospitalized, unimproved, 15% dead mainly caused by suicide.

  10. Jamie Fox plays a homeless man in the movie, The Soloist. He is a well talented musician but he suffers from schizophrenia. As a child, he once hallucinated that a car was driving down a street while it was on fire. Also while playing his instrument in front of a large crown, he hears voices talking to him causing him to freak out and run off stage.
People that suffer from mental illness make up 1/3 of the homeless population, which is about 250,000 out of 744,000 of the homeless population. Approximately 90,000 individuals with schizophrenia or manic-depressive illness are in all hospitals receiving treatment for their disease.

  11. In the movie The Soloist, Jamie Fox plays a homeless man that has high aspirations to study at Julliard, but due to his schizophrenic disorder he becomes a homeless musician on the streets of Los Angeles. Nathaniel suffered from hallucinations, paranoia and delusions. He always rambled, using random words and phrases (word salad). He often talked to himself and others who were invisible. He was never really in touch with reality or the world he was living in. He lived in his own world. When has was a young boy he often hallucinated. He saw things that weren't really there or real, like the time he saw a car caught on fire going down the railroad. The voices in his head made him paranoid and controlled his mind, making him do bad things. Like in the Soloist when he heard the voices in his head and tried to hurt his mother and then ran away. In 2012 there was over 636,000 homeless people in the United States. Research shows that 20-25% of the homeless population suffers from some kind of severe mental illness.

  12. There are several signs of schizophrenia shown in the movie. One of them is delusions. He can’t function without playing, and if he can’t play, he feels as though his entire life is shutting down. He also hears voices inside his head, some of them telling him to do things. Signs of paranoia are also displayed by Nathaniel. He remembers a time in his childhood where there was supposedly a car on fire, but in reality, there wasn’t. In addition, like a lot of schizophrenics, Nathaniel does not believe he is crazy. Mr. Lopez attempts to help and/or cure Nathaniel of his schizophrenia using several different methods. However, he does this “behind the scenes,” never informing Nathaniel of his problem. This allows him to live with the belief that he is not crazy and does not need help. One third of all homeless people have some sort of mental illness. Often, these people have never been diagnosed with a mental illness. The number is steadily increasing, and is alarming because of the dangers that homeless people face, such as assault. It is also sad, because these people have no source of food other than garbage cans.

  13. In The Soloist, Jaime Fox plays a homeless street musician who suffers from schizophrenia. Jaime Fox plays a man named Nathaniel. Nathaniel showed many signs and symptoms like hallucinating, where he heard many voices inside his head speaking to him. These voices are a huge distraction and makes it hard for him to focus. Also, he sees things that aren't really there or happening. For example, Nathaniel started hearing different voices in his head telling him to run away when performing. Another example, when Nathaniel was young, he began getting schizophrenia and had a hallucination of a rolling car that was on fire. Statistics say between 250,000 individuals with schizophrenia or manic-depressive illness are homeless among the 744,000 homeless population. Approximately 90,000 individuals with schizophrenia or manic-depressive illness are in all hospitals receiving treatment for their disease. Also freezing to death during harsh weather is very common among the homeless, but especially among individuals with schizophrenia and manic-depressive illness.

He shows many of the symptoms of schizophrenia throughout the film. He has many hallucinations and disorganized speech and behavior. His symptoms first came about when he was a child as the movie shows through flashbacks. He was also enrolled in Julliard and was a great musician but had to drop out because of his hallucinations and delusions. 16. In the Soloist actor Jamie Foxx played the role of Nathaniel, a homeless man who sufferred from schizophrenia. There are many signs and symptoms linked to the illness. Nathaniel suffered from quite a few of these. One symptom he suffered from was hallucinations. Nathaniel constantly thought he heard voices in his head talking to him when in reality they wernt really there. He also suffered from thought disorder. He had trouble getting his thoughts out and they usually ended up coming out in a word salad. Nathaniel had been homeless for a while and by being homeless he showed signs of 3 symptoms linked with schizophrenia. Neglect of personal hygiene, Social withdrawn, and loss of motivation. Loss of motivation of course until his news reporter friend came along.

Approximately 20-25% of the single adult homeless population suffers from some form of a severe and persistent mental illness.
While 22% of the American population suffers from a mental illness, a small percentage of the 44 million people who have a serious mental illness are homeless at any given point in time.
