ADHD

Misbehaving Boy

Students need to find a famous celebrity or athlete that has ADHD. You need to analysis their childhood and their history with the disorder. Include when they were diagnosed, their signs and symptoms, their struggles with the disorder over time and today. Also, look to see if  they self-medicated with drugs or alcohol.  Please post on the blog site. Do not copy each other. I will know. Due Tuesday at 11:59pm. I will not take late posts.

  1. Adam Levine was diagnosed with ADHD when he was a teen. He had a difficult time focusing in class and struggled with paying attention, being able to sit still, and controlling his impulses. He speaks honestly about how hard the simple things were for him, like sitting down and just focusing at school. Academics were particularly difficult for Adam. He says that even now as an adult he still faces challenges when he’s in the studio when recording music or just trying to get his ideas out on paper.

Getting up in the morning takes longer for Adam because he gets so distracted. He talks about the medicine that he took as a teen. He didn't like how the medicine made him feel zombie like. He no longer takes any ADHD meds. He was also attracted to illegal drugs and how they made him feel, mostly pot, so he self-medicated.

Adam thought that when he grew up that his ADHD would go away, he did not realize that it was something that would always be a part of who he was. He continues to work with his doctor on developing a treatment plan that will help him manage his ADHD. He has started a campaign called “Own It” that focuses on kids and adults that have ADHD. I think this is cool because so many people look at him and think he is hip and very successful. When I found out that Adam Levine had ADHD he felt more normal, more like me. I think we all suffer from some form of ADHD.

  2. Will Smith has spoken openly about his battle with ADHD as a child. He has accepted and embraced his disability as a tool that could improve his acting career, rather than as a burden that could only serve to affect his success. His diverse achievements demonstrate how something that is perceived as a “disability” by other people can be used as an inspiration for success if it is embraced and seen as a gift. As a child Will had trouble staying focus in class, he was a B student but he could’ve gotten straight A’S. It is said that he probably took Adderall to cope with his disorder as a child but that has not been proven yet. As teen he battled with an obsession with sex in an interview he said,” "Through my teenage years I was too focused on sex to even think about any other vices. I'm much the same now. No drugs and only the occasional drink." Instead of turning to drugs and alcohol like most people with ADHD Will choose women. Looking at his acting career you can surmise that he may have had some type of disorder because of his hyper personality.

  3. Ty Pennington, the host of the show Extreme Makeover, is diagnosed with ADHD. Ty was diagnosed when he was about 7 years old but when is mother found out she did not tell him because in his day it was called "Minimal Brain Disfunction" so she did not want him to feel like a worse kid than he already thought he was. He felt like a bad kid because although he was known as a bright boy, he was much of a distraction in class, always getting distracted and was a handful. He attended behavioral therapy to help him out and his mom noticed that he had an extreme intrest in building and creating things and showed to be calm when he was building. In highschool he was a B/C student, but in college he dropped out of Kennesaw State University. His mother saw that as a sign she should tell him he had ADHD so she did and they went to a doctor, who gave him stimulent medications which helped him out to be able to graduate honors at an art institute and use his building abilities as a carpenter, graphic designer, and later place a job on Trading Spaces and Extreme Makeover. Ty uses his hyper upbeat part of his ADHD as an advantage to keep his show upbeat instead of something that holds him back.

There is no record of Justin self-medicating or how he deals with his ADHD today.

  7. Karina Smirnoff is a dancer on Dancing with the Stars and has ADHD. Her family didn't believe in ADHD, and it wasn't until she moved to the US when she was 14 her friend urged her to go to the doctor to get checked out. It wasn't until she was in her 20s that she went to the doctor and actually got diagnosed. Her parents put her in figure skating when she was 3 years old to try and burn off energy. After figure skating came gymnastics, ballet, piano lessons, aerobics, then ballroom dancing. Her parents wanted to keep her busy so she would be tired at the end of the day and finally stop going. Even today when she is teaching a star to dance she gets distracted and it's hard to stay focus, and she finds it easier to just tell them that she has ADHD and she can manage it. She has learned to write things down and set reminders in her phone so she doesn't forget things. She takes the presciption Vyvanse to help control her ADHD.

  8. Unlike other people who found their diagnosis to be a blessing, Solange Knowles did not find solace in her doctor’s words. In fact, BeyoncĂ©’s younger sister went for a second opinion. The soulful songstress says she’s always been full of energy, and claims that sometimes her sporadic speech and effervescence led people to believe she was on drugs. When in fact it was actually ADHD. Knowles says that when a doctor told her she had ADHD she did not believe him: “I was diagnosed with ADHD twice. I didn’t believe the first doctor who told me and I had a whole theory that ADHD was just something they invented to make you pay for medicine, but then the second doctor told me I had it.” She also said that she feels everyone in the music business seems to suffer from the symptoms of ADHD. “The symptoms seem to apply to everyone around me in the industry. Loss of memory, starting something and not finishing it…” Traditionally, ADHD was thought to be a male-oriented disease, and men were once believed to account for the vast majority of cases. But recent research has begun to focus on how the disorder affects females, so that ADHD may be identified earlier in women’s lives.

  9. Michael Phelps the very famous Olympic swimmer struggled with ADHA since his very young childhood. Michel Phelps was first diagnosed with ADHD when he was in the fifth grade since his teacher reported that it was impossible for him to focus at all in class or even remain still during the classes he had. As Phelps struggled his mother decided to get him on medication for his ADHD so he started taking Ritalin which helped him calm down and less hyperactive, he never tried to self-medicate instead he continued taking his Ritalin until he asked to be taken off his medication. His doctor allowed him to stop taking his medication and since then Michel Phelps has used his swimming as a way to use up his extra energy which greatly helped him focus in his later older life.

  10. The one and only Ty Pennington, host of Extreme makeover home addition, suffers from ADHD. He was a crazy child but did not officially get diagnosed until he was 17 going into college. He says he was "uncontrollable as child unless he had a crayon and paper in his hand." As a kid at school he spent most of his day in the hallways or in detention because we has a handful in the class, causing all kinds of disruptions. School was the hardest part for him, he could not focus long enough to read a paragraph and when he did he would not remember a single thing. He spent most of his time getting disciplined instead of learning. This really affected him and brought down his self confidence. After he got officially diagnosed and started taking medicine, he noticed a huge change. His grades dramatically changed and he could actually focus in school. Ty went into art and design which became his real passion and he was able to challenge his energy through that. He is now a host of extreme makeover home addition where he has turned his ADHD into a positive thing. He constantly has things to do and is working on many projects at once so he is kept busy. He has also become a spokes person for ADHD as he says he is the perfect poster child for it.

Earning a spot in Sports Illistrated for his javeline throw record in High School. Not only did he suffer from ADHD, he also suffered from depression for a lot of his life. As a first year starter at Pittsburgh he attracted a lot of negative comments from announcers saying that his playing style was "erratic" and "nim-witted". With having ADHD its hard to believe how much that bothered him as a player. He came out towards the end of his career saying that he suffered from ADHD. Not only did he face the biggest opponents on the field, but also in his own mind..and won.

  12. Grammy award winning artist, Adam Levine struggled with ADHD. He had signs of ADHD, inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivityd. He said he struggled a lot in school and became very frustrated. Adam's doctor diagnosed him with ADHD in his early teens. What helped him through this as that it was an actual medical disorder. The condition helped explain to him why he was struggling so much in school. This disorder never changed his personality completely, his friends never noticed anything different and his parents were very supportive. Adam went to his doctor often and began a treatment plan to help with his ADHD.

  13. Brittney Spears was diagnosed with ADHD as a teen. The medication given to her as a teen was successful, however, she can no longer take it due to its interference with other medications for other mental health issues. The medications that are prohibited are but not limited to Adderall and Ritalin. Because she is not allowed to take the medication, she suffered a difficult time being a judge on X- Factor. She would have to take sporadic breaks and multiple moments to herself, in order to pull herself together. Brittney hit rock-bottom when she shaved all of her hair off, she says “Till this day I don’t think that it was the alcohol or depression… I was like a bad kid running around ADHD.” Brittney has a medical team working closely beside her to help her cope without medication. Her caffeine intake is regularly monitored, as it affects Brittney’s ability to focus.

  14. Born July 12, 1937, in Philadelphia, Bill Cosby has suffered from ADHD for years. I couldn't find when he was diagnosed with ADHD, but as a child Bill was constantly moving around and hyper. In school he was known as a class clowned and always wanted to make people laugh. His teachers realized that he was really good at making people laugh rather than paying attention in class and studying. Bill experienced repeated failures during his school and undergraduate years because of ADHD. Though Bill Cosby suffered from ADH and had a hard time paying attention he didn't use self-medication and was not an alcoholic. His type of self medication was his ability to make people laugh.

  15. Jerry Rice a former sensational NFL wide receiver was diagnosed with ADHD as a child. Although with ADHD the fact was that he was very coachable. Turns out even with this disability he became one of the most outstanding wide receivers in all time. ADHD coaching is different than counseling or psychotherapy. It is not about ‘healing’ as much as it is about functioning at your beat. He uses his ADHD to an advantage and create structures and tools to stay on track, improve organization – with tools and systems
plan more effectively etc. Most likely on medication for his symptoms.

  16. Michael Phelps is a Olympic swimming sensation. He is known to win multiple gold medals. He is so dedicated and focused that it's hard to believe that he had struggled from ADHD since he was a child. In school his teachers often complained about his inability to sit still. He couldn't focus on anything. Then in fifth grade, Phelps was diagnosed with ADHD. At age 9, Phelps was prescribed Ritalin which seemed to help calm him down. After two years of taking Ritalin, Phelps began to feel stigmatized and asked to be taken off the drug. He was eventually med free. Phelps enjoys swimming and used it to help him find focus, which worked and is now successful. Phelps was apparently smoking marijuana and this was questioned on whether it was linked to his ADHD.

  17. Michael Phelps is one of many famous people who have ADHD. He was never able to sit still in class and had extreme hyperactivity. He was diagnosed in 5th grade, and was put on the medication called Ritalin. After a few years on this medicine, he and his parents decided to discontinue the use of medication because it made Michael feel “stigmatized.” As a result, he needed something else to help him control his symptoms. This is when he turned to swimming. Competitive sports are often helpful to children with ADHD because it can burn off the extra energy and gives them something that they like to focus on, so they can feel success, rather than failure due to their usual lack of the attention span required to complete every day tasks. Swimming helped him develop self-discipline and was part of the reason he was able to come off of his medication. There is no confirmed evidence that Phelps self-medicated with drugs or alcohol, although controversy was raised over a photo found of him smoking pot at a college party.

  18. Adam Levine was diagnosed with ADHD as a teenager. He faced symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and trouble sitting and concentrating. He says that finding out the diagnoses helped to explain the challenges he was having such as getting his work done. He was not great with academics but his parents were patient and understanding, helping him create a treatment plan. As an adult he also has faced symptoms of ADHD and learned that it was still affecting him as an adult which is in fact very common. He finds that working with his doctor to come up with treatment is the best way for him to manage his ADHD.
